About UK trade strategy in a time of geopolitical turmoil

With global trade policy in tumult following a series of tariff announcements from the new Trump administration, the UK now faces critical choices for how best to pursue a successful trade agenda. The government is expected to publish a new trade strategy in the spring setting out how it intends to support its mission to boost economic growth, and in May the UK's 'reset' with the EU will begin in earnest as the prime minister hosts a major summit of EU leaders. The coming months will therefore be crucial for shaping how the UK government navigates the complex and fast-changing global trade landscape.

In January, IPPR published a report setting out our recommendations for the government's forthcoming trade strategy. This event will build on that report, bringing together senior politicians and experts to discuss the UK's approach to trade policy in the current geopolitical context. This builds on IPPR's January report setting out our recommendations for the government's forthcoming trade strategy.

We are delighted to be joined by:

  • The Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP, Chair of the Business and Trade Select Committee
  • Vicky Pryce, Chief Economic Adviser, Centre for Economics and Business Research
  • Chair: Marley Morris, Associate Director for Migration, Trade and Communities, IPPR
