Press Story

The leading think tank for the north of England has responded to the government’s announcement today that they will deliver the ‘next generation of new towns’.

IPPR North researcher India Gerritsen commented:

“Everyone deserves a safe, secure home in a community they feel they belong in – one that is well served by nurseries, schools, public services and transport. So the government’s commitment to building much-needed homes at scale, while integrating essential infrastructure, is welcome news indeed.

“New towns offer an exciting opportunity to reimagine what a place can be – led by citizens and with public services and transport designed to serve everyone, and a focus on what really matters, like children and beautiful green spaces. Where people are empowered and have a stake in local assets - community pride and public support will follow.

“It is also encouraging to see the government commit to 40% affordable housing in these developments. To address the severe shortage of social housing, we need to build 100,000 social homes over the next 20 years—this is a crucial step in the right direction.”
